Horsemanship Skills

  • April 4: Know normal TPR range for a horse, and discuss how to take TPR. Take and record TPR. Know how to measure a horse for height. Measure a horse for weight and height.

  • April 11: Fit a saddle, bridle (including bit), cinch and halter to a horse.

  • April 18: Know basic types and breeds of the horse. Name five breeds in each of the following categories: sporthorse, draft, gaited, pony, color breeds. Know basic conformation traits specific to the following breeds: Arabian, Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Andalusian. Relate to suitability for specific disciplines. Know basic colors and markings. Describe ten riding disciplines (Western or English).

  • April 25: Identify items in equine first aid kit, giving reasons for each item’s use. Apply a stable bandage.

  • Julie Christie Clinic: Julie will join us for two days this month - both already filled with riders ready to develop their skills! Be sure to let us know if you missed out - she'll be here again in May!

  • Midwest Horse Fair: If you love horses, this is your weekend! The fair in Madison is just over two hours away and brings together everything from education to entertainment, all centered around horses.

  • Groups & Games Show: Sign up for an afternoon of fun in the saddle. Add your name and horse selection to a barn whiteboard to join in on the fun.

  • Saddle Up Saturday: Scratch that horse itch with a mini lesson! Open to ages 4+ and perfect for solo or family afternoon horse time!
