NOVEMBER 2025

Issue 22

Happy October! Soon the air will turn crisp and the leaves will begin to fall, welcoming a season of new beginnings with our horses. Cooler weather means cozy rides, fuzzy coats, and plenty of time to enjoy the barn together. I’m spending a little time in Tennessee this month to rest and recharge—something I hope each of you finds a moment to do as well. Looking forward to enjoying the Spooktacular event later this month!

NOVEMBER 2025

Issue 22

November is a month that reminds us to find gratitude for the blessings in our lives.  I am grateful that my parents never told me I couldn’t make a living with horses.  I certainly had those who did!  I am grateful for the wonderful team of people who make Greenbriar the safe, enriching, welcoming place that it is.  Each person has their own special talents they bring to the table.  I’m grateful for our horses and that today we listen to our horses and develop them rather than dominate them.  Working with horses should be a two-way conversation.  I am grateful that our students and families continue to place their trust in us to guide them safely through their riding journeys.  It is because of you that we can see our dreams come to fruition.  I am grateful for our Greenbriar community.

Constant Inquiry

By Kathryn Kostenbader

My inspiration for beginning my journey to certification through the USDF Instructor/Trainer Development Program started in northern Iowa in the mid-90s, when I attended a lungeing clinic taught by Gerhardt Politz. At the time, I was unaware that there was an instructor certification program, and that this program taught how to classically train a horse and rider.

Since then, I have been teaching lessons and progressing in my own riding skills, all while teaching full-time in the public school system. In this time, I have also become a USDF ‘L’ Graduate. Now retired, I finally have the time and understanding, through constant inquiry, of the important role held by certified instructors. The USDF Instructor/Trainer Development Program has boosted my confidence in my training and teaching abilities, and I plan to continue up the levels and further my education with this informative program.

What I have learned from this program is that there are many qualified, experienced instructors in the dressage world to learn from and network with. The result of this education is an understanding of safe, progressive training methods for both horse and rider. Our horses deserve the best, and the systematic development of these skills is paramount to having a supple, sound horse, far into its later years. I would also like to develop a healthy, independent, thinking rider; one who is empathetic, knowledgeable, and happy to be in the company of these noble animals. This is what I hope to convey in my teachings.

Meet Brieanna Ewoldt!

A Fellow Student and Our Special Guest for Horsemanship on Saturday the 15th

Hello fellow Greenbriar community! My name is Brieanna Ewoldt and I started taking riding lessons at Greenbriar this year to further develop my English riding skills. I started riding horses at a young age and have worked with horses in many settings throughout my life. Their giant bodies yet gentle spirits are mysterious and captivating and I always find myself humbled and honored to be in their presence. Recently in September of this year, I received my certification in equine massage therapy and am currently working on creating my own business to offer my massage services to horse owners in Iowa!

INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT EQUINE MASSAGE!?

Join me and the instructors at Greenbriar on Saturday November 15th, 2025  for the Horsemanship Class from 9:00am – 11:00am where we will talk all about equine massage, what it is, who can perform it, the benefits of massage, when a horse may be in need of a massage, how to recognize stiffness and unsoundness in horses, and how proper fitting of tack and proper feeding techniques play a big role in affecting muscles and bones in horses. Be ready for a super fun hands-on activity with some of the horses at the end of the class where you will get a chance to feel and locate specific muscles and bones of the horse!

If you have any questions or concerns prior to the class, please reach out to Robin.

We hope to see you there!

David Landreville Hoof Building Clinic

On the last weekend of October, a dozen horses and a few dozen dedicated horse owners gathered at Greenbriar to learn from David Landreville how to trim their own horses’ hooves.

David teaches that the ultimate goal of hoof care is to maximize comfort, performance, and longevity for every horse. Trimming, in his view, should be far more than simple maintenance—it’s about building the hoof. By simulating the natural miles of wear a horse would experience in the wild, we can help align the outer structures of the hoof with the inner ones, creating balance and resilience from the inside out.

A key part of this process is developing strong, flexible soft tissue—something that’s often missing in our domesticated horses. David emphasizes that hooves should never be carved, forced into preconceived angles, or compacted with dead material that only gives the illusion of soundness. Instead, the goal is a fully live, highly functional hoof.

Throughout the weekend, students learned to recognize the difference between soft tissue that is engaged or disengaged, building up or breaking down, strengthening or atrophying. This ability, David explains, is vital for effective hoof care. One of his central teachings is the importance of shaping the Palmar Contours—a crucial, often overlooked element in modern trimming practices. By shaping the hoof in alignment with its internal anatomy, we can build stronger, healthier, more functional hooves that last a lifetime.

With over 20 years of experience as a hoof care practitioner and clinician, David Landreville has dedicated his career to helping people build better hooves. His approach blends technical precision with emotional connection, encouraging trimmers to listen closely to the horse’s feedback. For David, the horse is the ultimate judge of the trim and the experience, reminding us all that the smallest details—and a willingness to listen—make all the difference.

He truly is a man who listens to the horse.
